Narita (Baccano!, Durarara!!) started the story in April 2008 as an April Fool’s joke. The author then developed the story and launched it as a light novel with illustrations by Morii Shizuki. The first novel was released in July 2015, and the ninth novel on March 8th, 2024.

Morii also adapted the light novel series into a manga. The first tankoubon volume was released in July 2018, and the fifth in March 2022. The novels inspired a TV anime, Fate/Strange Fake—Whispers of Dawn, which premiered in July 2023.

Fate Strange Fake Manga Cover Volume 1

The Holy Grail War is a battle in which magicians summon heroic spirits and compete in search of the Holy Grail, a desire machine that can grant any wish. Several years after the end of the Fifth Holy Grail War, which took place in Japan, the next battle emerged in the land of Snowfield in the western United States. ──It is a Holy Grail War full of lies. Magicians and heroic spirits gathered on a false pedestal. They continue dancing on the pedestal despite knowing this is a false Holy Grail War. The truth or falsity is beyond the equinox, not for the Holy Grail but for their beliefs.
