Kumano Chihiro will direct the anime at 100studio, and the anime will star Maeda Kaori as Kanna Kusakabe and Konishi Katsuyuki as Akihiko Chuzenji.
The anime is based on the Shimizu Aki’s Chuuzenji-sensei Mononoke Kougiroku: Sensei ga Nazo o Toite Shimaukara (The Mononoke Journal by Chuzenji-sensei) manga. Shimizu started the manga in October 2019 in Kodansha’s Shounen Magazine Edge, and Kodansha published the manga’s first tankoubon volume in July 2020 and the 1oth volume in October 2024. The manga is a spinoff and prequel to the Hyakki Yakou novel series by Kyogoku Natsuhito.
This story takes place before the exorcist Kyogokudo opened a used bookstore. It follows a female student named Kanna Kusakabe in 1948 Tokyo, just after the war. Kanna Kusakabe had just become a second-year at a high school when she met the new language teacher, Akihiko Chuzenji.
Mysterious supernatural things keep happening around Kanna, and once again, Kanna is going to open the doors to the library prep room to seek help from the surly Chuzenji-sensei, who is waiting inside. A high school supernatural mystery featuring the unlikely duo between a teacher and a high school girl is about to begin!
