Kodansha published the manga’s first volume in May 2018, and its 17th volume in May 2025. The manga won the Best Shoujo Manga award in Kodansha’s 45th Manga Awards in 2021.
Kodansha USA Publishing releases the manga series in English under the name A Condition Called Love, and it released the manga’s 17th volume on September 9th, 2025. It describes the manga’s story below:
“Hotaru is a 16-year-old high school first-year who has always been ambivalent about love, preferring instead to have a lively life with her family and friends. So when she sees her schoolmate, Hananoi-kun, sitting in the snow after a messy, public breakup, she thinks nothing of offering to share her umbrella. But when he asks her out in the middle of her classroom the next day, she can’t help but feel that her life is about to change in a big way…”
The Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai manga inspired a TV animation, which premiered in April 2024, and it was announced that the manga series will get a spinoff manga in the January 2026 issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Dessert magazine.
All 12 episodes of the anime adaptation can be streamed on Crunchyroll under the title A Condition Called Love. Crunchyroll describes the anime story below:
