After working on Momoiro Meloik for Shounen Gahosha‘s Young King, Fukuda launched Bisque Doll on Square Enix‘s Young Gangan on January 19, 2018. Square also licensed the series in English in 2019 under the title “My Dress-Up Darling”. An animated adaptation produced by CloverWorks and directed by Shinohara Keisuke aired on January 9, 2022; a second season was also announced on September 17, 2022, for a yet-to-be-confirmed premiere date.
Gojou Wakana works in his grandfather’s hina doll workshop and shares his passion for the job. After a childhood friend tore into him for being “a boy who plays with dolls”, he started distancing himself from others, afraid of their judgement. To him, his classmate Kitagawa Marin, who is always surrounded by people and never fails to be true to herself, feels like someone from a whole different world. When Marin accidentally walks into him sewing doll clothes in the arts and crafts room, he fears he’s about to relive his childhood trauma. Not only does Marin hold no prejudice towards him, but she also asks him to help her with her cosplaying hobby. This marks the beginning of Wakana’s first meaningful friendship in a long time and the first step into a world that, while bewildering and strange to him, also encourages him to embrace his passion without reserve.
