The anime is based on Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of God/ 神の雫) manga by Agi Tadashi and Okimoto Shu. Agi and Okimoto started the original manga story in November 2004 in Kodansha’s Morning magazine and ended it in June 2014. Kodansha published the manga’s first tankoubon volume in March 2005 and the 44th and final volume in July 2014.

The manga has been officially translated into English, Chinese, French, and Portuguese. Kodansha USA has released all 44 manga volumes digitally in English under the name The Drops of God, and it also releases an omnibus print version of the manga. The first omnibus volume was released in November 2025, the second in January 2026, and the third will be released on March 17th, 2026.

Kodansha USA describes the manga below:

” When world-renowned wine critic Kanzaki passes away, his will reveals that his fortune of a wine collection isn’t bequeathed as a matter of course to his only son, who in a snub went to work sales at a beer company. To come into the inheritance, Shizuku must identify—in competition with a stellar young critic—twelve heaven-sent wines whose impressions the will describes in flowing terms …”

The manga inspired a Japanese live-action TV series in 2009 titled Kami no Shizuku, and a live-action series in 2023 titled Drops of God, which was multilingual and internationally co-produced. The series’s second season premiered on Apple TV on January 21st, 2026.
