Sanbe Kei’s Otogi no Hako no Reto has been officially licensed in English by Square Enix via the Manga UP! app, as per the announcement on the latter’s Twitter account, with the title “Reto the Protector”. The first chapter is already available to read on the app.

Also known for Boku dake ga Inai Machi, Kamiyadori and Yume de Mita Ano Ko no Tame ni, Sanbe began publishing the manga on Square Enix‘s Big Gangan on March 25, 2023, the first volume being released on August 4. The series receives counselling and cooperation from Akan Ainu Consuln, an organization founded by Hirono Hiroshi in 2019 for the purpose of promoting Ainu culture and protecting their intellectual property.

When he was a boy, Reto turned up in an Ainu village, alone and covered in wounds, with no memories of his past. Only two things were in his possession: a memory of his mother being killed, and a tashiro (Ainu hunting knife) without its blade. Nonetheless, the Ainu tend to his wounds and raise him as one of their own, with love and care. Then one day, a volley of cannon shots tears through the village, and in its wake appear mysterious-robed men. Where has Reto seen them before?
