Staff for the Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End/ 葬送のフリーレン ) TV anime have released a new key visual for the anime’s second season and confirmed that the new season will premiere on January 16th, 2026, on Nippon TV’s network.
The anime’s first season, directed by Saitou Keiichirou at Madhouse studio, premiered on September 29th, 2023. The anime ran until March 2024, and all 28 episodes can be streamed on Crunchyroll under the name Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Crunchyroll describes the anime below:
“This fantasy begins as heroes disband following a quest to defeat the Demon King. As decades pass, the elf mage Frieren attends a comrade’s funeral and learns new things about her old companions.
This anime blends fantasy, reflection, and insightful character development with themes of friendship and mortality. Across the 28-episode series, we follow Frieren, her apprentice Fern, and a warrior named Stark. As they travel through lands the hero party had fought to save, Frieren works to fulfil the last wishes of her former companions.
Along their journey, Frieren begins to discover what it means to truly live and connect with others. In addition to Fern and Stark, flashbacks introduce Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, and others from Frieren’s past. Getting to know these characters deepens the story’s emotional weight and contrasts Frieren’s elf life and the lives of her companions.”
The anime is based on the Sousou no Frieren manga by Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa. Yamada and Abe started the manga in April 2020 in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine, and Shogakukan published the manga’s first tankoubon volume in August 2020. The latest volume to be released was number 14 in March 2025.
The manga went on hiatus in May 2024 and returned in August 2024. It went on hiatus again in January 2025 and returned in July 2025.
Viz Media publishes the manga in English under the name Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and it released the manga’s 13th volume in May 2025. It describes the manga below:
“Decades after their victory, the funeral of one of her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfil the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…”
