As previously announced in the September issue of Akita Shoten‘s Bessatsu Shounen Champion, FLIPFLOPs’ Darwin’s Game will end its ten-year run with chapter 125 this week. A 19-page epilogue chapter titled “Rain’s Epilogue” will be published on Nov 10, 2023, in the same magazine.
Surprisingly also known as the original author of Nekogami Yaoyorozu, FLIPFLOPs launched the series in the January 2013 issue of Champion on December 12, 2012; the current twenty-nine tankoubon volumes have currently sold 9.5 million copies, and the thirtieth and final one will be out on January 5, 2024. An animated adaptation produced by Nexus and directed by Tokumoto Yoshinobu also aired from January 3 to March 20, 2020, on Tokyo MX and other channels.
High school student Sudou Kaname receives what looks like an invitation from a classmate to play a mobile game called “Darwin’s Game” But the moment he opens the application, a snake suddenly pops out from his phone screen and bites him in the neck, leaving him unconscious. When he later wakes up in the school infirmary seemingly unharmed, he dismisses the event as a hallucination but still decides to leave early.
After boarding the train home he can’t resist the temptation to open the application one more time. No matter how he looks at it, it appears to be a battle game like any other, so he starts his first match without much thought. However, what he doesn’t expect is his in-game opponent appears right in front of him, sitting across the train car with a sharp knife in hand. That is when the realization finally hits Kaname: “Darwin’s Game” is no mere mobile game. It’s all very real, and his only choices are to fight and survive or die.
