The anime is based on the Boukensha License o Hakudatsusareta Ossan Dakedo, Manamusume ga Dekita node Nonbiri Jinsei o Oukasuru (冒険者ライセンスを剥奪されたおっさんだけど、愛娘ができたのでのんびり人生を謳歌する ) light novel series by Ononata Manimani and Fuzichoco.
Author Onanata started the original story in 2017 on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website, and SB Creative’s GA Novel imprint published the first novel, with illustration by Fuzichoco, in August 2018. The fourth novel was released in October 2022.

Comikey releases the manga chapters in English under the name I Lost My Adventurer’s License, but It’s Fine Because I Have an Adorable Daughter Now, and it describes the manga story below:
““I guess she’ll be the last person I’ll ever save…”
Douglas, once known as a legendary enhancement spellcaster, is now little more than your average, weak old man. On top of that, he was kicked out of the hero party, and eventually had his adventurer’s license revoked… And that’s how he ended up a vagabond, wandering aimlessly. After an encounter with Rabi, a cursed little girl, a new adventure begins…”
