Heaven offers enlightenment and salvation to the purehearted, whereas Hell condemns sinners to an eternity of agony. By definition, they were the two single afterlife choices - up or down, there's no in between. Apparently, this knowledge is outdated. From what Angeline observes, solace could be achieved in a place swarming with fiends and resentful spirits, where even the air reeks of death. If only she wasn't the one having to play Ghost Whisperer, perhaps she could learn to find beauty in such a place...
