While ferrying freight through the Thuliv galaxy, a bored drifter is attacked by pirates in pursuit of a very specific, and very precious cargo. Taken prisoner on the orders of a mysterious Elven woman, he finds himself mixed up in a struggle between a government which aims to sever mages from their magic, and a pro-mage insurgency called the Spring Tide Rebellion.
