The Magic Knight Rayearth franchise began with the original Magic Knight Rayearth manga by CLAMP (Sailor Moon, She-Ra, Cardcaptors). The manga was serialised from 1993 to 1995 in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine, and the sequel manga titled Magic Knight Rayearth II from 1995 to 1996. Kodansha released three tankoubon volumes for the original manga and a further three volumes for the sequel.
The manga inspired a TV anime in 1994 titled Magic Knight Rayearth, and it received a second season in 1995 titled Magic Knight Rayearth 2. In 1997, it also inspired a three-episode OVA project titled Rayearth.
In late 2002 and early 2003, all six manga volumes were re-released by Kodansha, and the volumes were released again in late 2022 and early 2023 as part of the CLAMP Premium Collection, in celebration of the manga series’ 30th anniversary.
Kodansha USA Publishing released the original manga volumes and their sequel, digitally in English, under the titles Magic Knight Rayearth and Magic Knight Rayearth 2. Kodansha USA Publishing describes the manga story below:
“While on a field trip to Tokyo Tower, three teenage girls cross a magical portal and are transported to another world called Cefiro. There they are summoned through the last remaining strength of the Princess Emeraude, who believes the trio will become the magic knights who will save her, as prophesied by legend.”
