The anime series can be streamed on Crunchyroll under the name Date A Live, and it describes the anime story below:
“Ordinary high school boy Shido discovers a mysterious girl at ground zero of a recent spacequake. Shido learns, through his sister Kotori, that the girl is one of the Spirits: mystical creatures responsible for the spacequakes. Shido is recruited to help “seal” the sprits and end their threat to mankind. There’s just one catch: the only way to seal a spirit—is to make her fall in love with you.”
The anime is based on the Date A Live (デート・ア・ライブ ) light novel series by Tachibana Koushi (Ousama no Propose) with illustrations by Tsunko. The first novel was released by Kadokawa in March 2011, and the 22nd and final novel was released in March 2020.

Yen Press releases the light novel series in English under the name Date A Live, and it will release the 16th novel on July 14th, 2026. Yen Press describes the novel story below:
“A little meet-cute in a decimated city April 10. The first day of school. Shido Itsuka is rudely awoken by his personal alarm clock-his little sister. It’s shaping up to be another typical day…well, as typical as it gets on a planet plagued by massive spatial quakes. Little does Shido know, however, his life is about to take a sudden turn when he encounters the source of this destructive phenomenon-a girl his age, apparently known as a Spirit. Turns out, there are only two ways he can stop her from unleashing hell on the world: Eliminate her by force or placate her…by taking her out on a date and making her fall in love with him!”
The light novels have inspired several novel spin-offs, manga adaptations and video games.
