The light novel series Mimosa no Kokuhaku (The Mimosa Confessions), created by Hachimoku Mei and illustrated by Kukka, will end with the fifth novel. Hachimoku announced the news on her Twitter account this week. The first novel was published in July 2021, and the fourth volume was published in Japan by Shogakukan on December 18th, 2023. There is currently no release date for the fifth novel. Seven Seas has licensed the light novels and will publish them in English starting June 2024.
Hachimoku and Kukka previously collaborated on the novel Natsu e no Tunnel, Sayonara no Deguchi (The Tunnel of Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes), released in July 2019. The novels inspired a manga adaptation by Koudon, which was published in Shogakukan’s Sunday GX magazine from July 2020 to November 2021.
The Mimosa no Kokuhaku light novel centres on Sakuma, who has little to brighten his humdrum days besides his best friend. The bright, talented, and attractive Ushio seems to have everything Sakuma lacks, and his academics and athletic prowess make him popular with the girls at school. Past trauma—and an understandable inferiority complex—slowly drive the two apart, and by the time they enter high school, they hardly even speak anymore. Thus, Sakuma finds himself alone.
Against all odds, he eventually gains a friend in Natsuki, the sweetest girl in class. The two hit it off, gushing about their favorite novels, and he falls head over heels for her. But that very night, he stumbles upon an unexpected sight while walking through a familiar park: his old friend Ushio, dressed in a full-blown schoolgirl’s uniform, sobbing uncontrollably.
